Development of women’s football

Development of women's football

The history of women’s football is very interesting and dates back more than two centuries. The very first confirmation of the existence of women’s football are frescoes that were made in China about two centuries ago.

We will talk about the history of the emergence of women’s football as a professional sport later. And now I would like to draw attention to how football developed in principle.

Now, football stands as one of the three most beloved sports around the world, near and far reaching its fans in thousands. Football fans buy tickets within seconds for a championship and football betting is almost a ritual that comes across with new technology. Many people consider watching a match on a Friday evening to be absolutely normal.

It’s often believed football is meant for men, what about the women in that sport?

A Brief History of Women’s Football

At some point, the national football associations of England, Germany, and Holland also outlawed women’s football. Until the 1970s, football was considered a predominantly male sport.

Women’s football was abolished for social reasons, as football allegedly does not correspond to traditional ideas about women, medical reasons – it is harmful to their health, and purely sporting reasons – women’s football allegedly cannot be compared with men’s football in terms of entertainment and drama. Nevertheless, over time, it gained recognition in many countries – primarily in Norway, Sweden, Italy, and a little later – in Germany and the USA (where, according to some data, girls and women already make up about 40 percent of the total number of players in various clubs).

At the end of December 1920, a couple of days after Christmas, an unprecedented crowd of about 53 thousand spectators gathered at Goodison Park in Liverpool. There were thousands more who did not manage to get into the stands and had to stay outside the gates. This was not an Everton match for Everton is the football club that has played out of Goodison Park since the very end of the 19th century, but a game between Dick, Kerr Ladies, and St. Helen’s Ladies. The record for attendance at a women’s football match, set then, stood for the entire 20th century and was only broken in 2012 in London, during the meeting between the teams of Great Britain and Brazil as part of the Olympic tournament.

UEFA and Women’s Football

Returning to Europe, where the pace of development took off around women’s football in the early 1980s, this was after UEFA officially took charge of organizing the tournaments.

The first Euro under UEFA auspices from 1982 to 1984 ended with a Swedish victory over the English team at 4:3 in the final. The next tournament dragged on for three years. In the final, in 1987, the Swedes and Norwegians met. So the trophy got a second owner. Two years later, the era of the German national team began in women’s football. This side gave the reigning champions from the continent a nice thrashing: 4:1.

The same took place on that pitch in 1991, as with that exact same match-up: the Germans won. For the tournament from 1991 to 1993, the Norwegians were at the top. The Germans, however, were able to reclaim their top possession, but till this day, they are still the best in the “Old World”.

The first unofficial World Cup was staged in China in 1988. And three years later, the already recognized tournament was held there, in which twelve teams participated. The title went to the Americans, who defeated the Norwegian team in the decisive match with a score of 2:1. In 1995, the competition moved to Sweden. This time, the victory was celebrated by the Norwegians, who won the final against Germany – 2:0.

As you can see, women’s football began to gain recognition and recognition.

The Importance of Developing and Popularizing Women’s Football in the Context of Modern Sports

The dynamic development and active popularization of women’s football significantly increases the interest of spectators in this sport. Fans eagerly await the appearance of their favorite players on the field, betting on the outcome of matches among women’s teams.

Developing, women’s football attracts more and more audiences, thereby providing a level of popularization that was previously unavailable. The number of fans of this sport is growing, following matches becomes more exciting thanks to bets on football games.

Women’s football players continue to represent their country with dignity in the international arena, demonstrating a high level of professionalism and fortitude. Women’s football is the pride of every country, because they deserve equal recognition with their male colleagues.

Conclusion

As it is confirmed by significant events like the Women’s Champions League, women’s football today attracts as many women as it does men. Such an event is the Women’s Champions League, a phenomenal bazaar event for masses worldwide. The Women’s World Cup is also important: its level of competition forces participants to demonstrate the highest professional skills.

Of course, we cannot do without mentioning the Olympic Games, where football is one of the central disciplines.
